Collections of Funds, Visa and Fast Food Gift Cards

When we say “support our troops”—that is exactly what we mean.  By promoting this collection, we will not only be able to support our troops, but we will also be able to help their families as well. Families coping with the leave of a loved one because they are abroad, often find themselves struggling financially due to a loss in overall income. The goal of the collection is to pre-sent these struggling families with Visa gift cards, which could be used to purchase groceries, gasoline, school supplies or clothing.

Fast Food Gift Cards
Fast food is in great demand, especially by hospitalized troops and their visiting family members. The majority of them have recently returned from Iraq or Afghanistan, where it is nearly impossible to indulge in most American fast-food favorites. Additionally, enjoying a restaurant meal is both costly and time-consuming for visitors. By giving these people gift cards that could be used in nearby fast-food chains, we are enabling them to get away from the hospital and its cafeteria-like food. Hospital staff members are often available to pick up.

During the Biennial State Convention, we will give a prize to one lucky donor. The donation could be in the form of $20 or $20 worth of gift cards, in which the preferred fast food cards are Subway, Dunkin, Burger King, McDonalds, KFC, and Taco Bell. These restaurants are conveniently located near Walter Reed Army Medical Center and the National Naval Center. Once the donation has been made, you will receive a ticket that will automatically enter you into the prize drawing. The prize will either be an Xbox or a Nintendo Wii. The winner will be announced at the convention.

To learn more about these and other similar programs, please visit the APWU Human Relations Department’s Support our Troops and Veterans Web site at www.apwu.org. As always, I look forward to working with all of you at the upcoming convention on these important projects. These folks have earned and deserve our ongoing support.
